I was inspired by the pink flowers in the photo, plus the pattern inside the suitcase lid. I also liked the straight lines of the books, so I mimicked that with the straight lines of the patterned paper. The patterned paper is from the Basic Grey Hello Luscious collection- love, love, love that paper- the colors, the patterns, yum! It's hard to see in the photo, but there's a little bit of glitter between the patterned paper to give the card a little bit of sparkle and some more texture. There's also glitter in the center of the flowers. Love those little yellow flowers!

This is one of my favorite layouts from Clean and Simple Stamping. It's a great way to use up the patterned paper I tend to hoard. Yes. I hoard patterned paper. I think I need to make more cards using this layout, or there may soon be a show on TLC or Discovery Channel about me and my paper "collection". Anyone else a hoarder? What do you tend to hang to and never want to use?

Make it Monday Challenge #29

This week's Papertrey Ink Challenge is to color outside the lines using Copic Markers. I don't have any Copic's, so I substituted my Prismacolor colored pencils instead. The colors were blended together using odorless mineral spirits.

Papertrey Ink Make it Monday #28

So...it's been a while since I've done anything crafty and an even longer while since I last posted on this blog. But, it's time. Time to get back into the swing of things, dust off my craft desk and dust off that tiny creative part of my brain. I made this little card for Papertrey Ink's Make it Monday Challenge. This is the first time I'm actually posting a card for a challenge. I've lurked, done the challenges in secret, but I'm taking the plunge and posting. The layout for this card also corresponds with Clean and Simple Stamping FTL153. I added a couple more layers than the sketch and moved the sentiment, but their layout served as the inspiration for this card.

As I mentioned yesterday, my friend Whitney has a great blog, Fauxshionable and her post today is featuring the monogrammed note cards I made for her. Here's Whitney's post: Handmade Chicago

Whitney has great style about her and I wanted the note cards to reflect that. We worked together picking out a font for her monogram and she chose the color scheme. I added the little details which transform the note card from being just a folded piece of card stock to something that visually draws you in. The swirl detail draws your eyes down and to the right to help Whitney's monogram stand out and the lower right corner of the card is rounded off, mirroring the softness and curves of the swirl. There is also a tiny bit of sparkle on key points of the swirl and on the "L" in the monogram- not too much to be obnoxious, just the perfect amount of bling. I also gave Whitney a matching set of envelopes to use with her note cards.

Here are some note cards I made for Whitney a few years ago- again working with her to develop a design and color scheme that reflects her personality.

What I've been up to lately...

Hello my crafty blog friends! Just dropping in with a quick hello! It's been a fun-filled crafty summer thus far. I've recently wrapped up a couple of big projects: place cards, menus and programs for a wedding, and monogrammed note cards for a good friend of mine.

I loved designing and creating the items for the wedding! Working with the bride to incorporate her wedding colors and her design tastes was so much fun and I'm glad that I (KZ Paperie, really) could be a tiny part of her special day. Here are a few photos that my sister took of my creations at the wedding (click on the photos for a larger image):

These were the place cards for the wedding. The bride's colors were chartreuse and champagne. The flowers the bridesmaids carried and the centerpieces for the tables had pink and purple flowers, so I pulled in pink as an accent color for the green and ivory on the place cards. The dots in the upper right corner are not part of the place card design- they were to indicate what menu choice was ordered to the wait staff.

The programs for the ceremony. The programs were simple, 8 1/2 x 11 ivory card stock folded in half. The swirl design was stamped twice on the front of the program and once on the back in chartreuse ink. The same swirl design was used on the menus as well.

I LOVED how the menus turned out! Pulling in the pink ribbon and the pink swirl really made them "pop" and stand out on the table!

One more photo of the menu- oh and if you look closely, at the top in the center of the photo is the table number- I made those as well! Chartreuse background, table number printed in ivory, same pink swirl stamped on it for color. You can click on the photo for a larger image.

The other project I just completed were some monogrammed note cards for my good friend Whitney. Whitney has a FABULOUS blog, Fauxshionable, filled with great photographs and style advice for those of us to want to look like we stepped out of the pages of Vogue and still keep a few dollars in our wallet! My apologies, dear blog readers. I was half asleep and too lazy last night when I posted the St. Patrick's Day cards and didn't bother to take the few extra minutes to clean up the pics in Photoshop. Looking at the post now, those photos are terribly dark and the different shades of green used on the cards kind of run together. Sorry about that! I'll try to get some done editing in Photoshop tonight... Ugh...

Everyone Loves an Irish Girl...

Hello my crafty friends! It’s been a while, eh? After the holidays, I took a much needed break from my studio to recharge my crafty batteries, but now I’m back in action!

St. Patrick’s Day is one of my favorite holidays. Dressing in head to toe green, drinking Guinness and/or green beers with friends, making homemade Irish Soda bread, going over to my parents’ house for my mom’s traditional St. Pat’s Dinner, what’s not to love about St. Patty’s Day??

Here are a few cards to help celebrate St. Patrick’s Day:

On this first card, the shamrock image is popped out to give it dimension and it’s covered in glitter for some sparkle. The layout design came from Clean and Simple Stamping.

For the second card, I used the patterned paper as inspiration for the color scheme of the card, pulling in the navy and the orange from the plaid as accent colors. The patterned paper also has a linen texture, giving the card a little more interest. The layout is also from Clean and Simple Stamping.

My Christmas crafts are winding down, so just wanted to pop in and share one of the last things I’m working on for this holiday season, some Christmas thank you notes.

This card has some of my favorite things:

A clean and simple layout idea, courtesy of Clean and Simple Stamping
Patterned paper, specifically Basic Grey Figgy Pudding patterned paper
An excuse to go through my scrap pile for the patterned paper strips
A little bit of sparkle in the center of the poinsettias, which may be hard to see in the photo

I love patterned paper. It’s sad how much I love patterned paper. A dear friend of mine even had a t-shirt made for me regarding my love of patterned paper. It helps to add so much character and color to projects, especially when using coordinating designs like this Figgy Pudding paper. I love Figgy Pudding, the paper- not the actual fig pudding, that is. It’s Basic Grey’s holiday line from a few years ago and I’m clinging on my last few pieces and scraps of it. I think I may shed a tear when the last piece is used up. *sigh*

I *heart* Ali Edwards. She is my crafty idol. She does amazing things with scrapbooking, encouraging people to not focus so much on how beautiful the page looks, but instead it’s more important to tell your story. I’ve dabbled in scrapbooking a little bit and someday when I have more time (ha!), I hope to take some of her advice and inspiration and create books of my own, telling my story. But anyway, as I was checking out Ali’s blog today, I notice a project similar to one of my own- holiday blocks!! Holiday Block Party

Hello my frosty friends! Staying warm this chilly, chilly evening? I’m wishing I could craft up a way to stop the draft that’s seeping in through my window. Below is one of my favorite Christmas crafts. I made these a couple of years ago and gave them away as little gifts to friends and family. They are a perfect decoration for that shelf that just needs a little extra something!

These blocks aren’t just for Christmas! Picture a set in pinks and reds that says “love” for Valentine’s Day…or what about orange, black and “Boo!” for Halloween? Or, what a about a personalized set to decorate a child’s room? So many possibilities!

Here are photos of a few of the Christmas cards I made last year. Still trying to wrap up this year’s offerings, but haven’t made it into my studio (aka the crap room) yet this week. With this snow and chilly weather, all I’ve wanted to do is curl up under a blanket and watch the movie “White Christmas” (who doesn’t just love Bing Crosby??), while drinking hot chocolate. My name is Kristin and I craft. For years I’ve been making my own holiday cards and little crafty gifts for family and friends, but it’s always been just for fun. Earlier this summer, a dear friend asked if I would make the place cards for her wedding. I panicked. Place cards? Wedding? A fancy, formal event? This is a big deal… But, I rose to the challenge and designed a simple, yet elegant place card that she fell in love with. The place cards were the hit of the wedding and my work got rave reviews (a slight exaggeration, perhaps). Which got me thinking…could I maybe turn a profit from my craftiness? Granted, it will probably be decades before a profit is actually made with the amount of $$ I’ve shelled out over the years on this ~~addiction~~ hobby of mine, but a few extra dollars once in a while to feed my Starbucks cravings would be a good thing. So, here I am, starting this blog to display what goes on in my studio, aka, the “crap room”, as my mother affectionately calls it. Why the “crap room” you may ask? Honestly, it’s perpetually a mess and is the room in my house that everything that doesn’t have a particular place goes to die. But, in spite of the mess, it’s full of inspiration! Now, please excuse me as I step over the suitcase still out from my trip to Disney World last month (told you, perpetual mess) and get to work on some crafty goodness…

As projects are complete, I’ll post photos on here, but please, please, PLEASE feel free to contact me about any custom projects you may be interested in! The possibilities are endless!!
